Method

Before I start a project, I always listen very carefully to the customers needs and try to find out which are my creative limitations. This can be related to colour-use, forms, surface covered by mosaics, prices of tiles and so on…

Based on this information I make my first ‘normal’ sketches in outline, I do always create a couple of ‘crazy’ try-outs just to check what’s possible.

When we agree about the global form, follows the colour-use. This is one of the most crucial decisions. If possible I go together with my client on search for the most suited tiles. Once I have all the ingredients I can start to lay a first pattern.

So, I do not start immediately with pasting mosaic, I always puzzle a bit until I have more or less 3 patterns. Like this, the customer can still give feedback and can explain his/her real taste. After a couple of changes, we’re finished with the content and I start drawing patterns with chalk on the wall. If we also agree about this part, the real mosaic work can start!
